Switzerland’s last two performances in World Cup haven’t really been anything special. In 2006, they became the first team to be knocked out of the tournament without conceding a goal when they lost on penalties after a 0-0 draw vs Ecuador. They only managed to score four themselves in 2006. Then came South Africa in 2010, where they managed to score 1 goal and conceded 1 goal and crashed out of the tournament early.
The Swiss team has changed and they are hoping that this time round in Brazil, things will be a little different. They have a lot of young talent, many which won the under 17 World Cup in 2009 and reached the final of 2011’s European U21 Championship. The youth will provide more pace and energy to the already energetic outfit. The Swiss federation thrives on a well developed youth programme and often uses the countries large immigrant community to produce young talent. You could often say, Hitzfeld is relying on non-Swiss talent.
